Rarities Committee
Recently a group of independent, well acknowledged birders in Ecuador have formed an Ecuadorian Ornithological Records Committee: Comité Ecuatoriano de Registros Ornitológicos (CERO). Their goal is to collect, review and document all new bird records made in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. Any observation that provides new information on the distribution and occurrence of a bird species in Ecuador should be reported. This includes observations of rare and scarce birds but also sightings of common species seen outside their normal range. The Birds of Ecuador (Volume 1) by Ridgely and Greenfield (2001) is a good reference for the status and distribution of bird species in Ecuador. The South American Classification Committee (SACC) has been maintaining a Species List of Ecuador but CERO will soon maintain and update Ecuador’s official country bird list.
